About this event

Join us for a special screening of Jalsaghar (1958), Satyajit Ray’s celebrated film and the inspiration for Debjani Banerjee’s current exhibition of the same name at Bluecoat. The film tells the story of a wealthy aristocrat and patron of classical music whose world is slowly changing around him. As his fortune and status decline, he becomes increasingly devoted to preserving the artistic traditions and legacy he holds dear. Featuring an unforgettable performance by Chhabi Biswas, alongside music by Ustad Vilayat Khan, vocals by Begum Akhtar and dance by Roshan Kumari, the film brings together music, performance and storytelling with quiet elegance. The title Jalsaghar, meaning “music room” in Bengali, is reimagined by Banerjee as a sensory space shaped by sound, memory and storytelling. Exploring her Bengali heritage and her upbringing in 1980s England, Banerjee works across film, sculpture and installation to bring together traditional craft, religious imagery and modern culture. Her exhibition invites audiences to reflect on what happens when different ways of life meet. Running time: 1hr 40min Age rating: PG-13 Doors open at 5.45pm. £10.50 (booking required) A limited number of free tickets are available for those who are unwaged or experiencing financial hardship. Please select this option if it applies to you.
